V-Piel-Imperf-2ms  |  6× in 1 sense
To bore out, gouge, or dig; especially of gouging out eyes, also of piercing bones or quarrying stone.
A verb meaning to bore, gouge, or pick out, with a visceral physicality that makes it one of the more graphic terms in Hebrew Scripture. Its most common application is to the gouging out of eyes: Nahash the Ammonite threatened to gouge out the right eye of every man of Jabesh-gilead (1 Sam 11:2), and the Philistines gouged out Samson's eyes after his capture (Judg 16:21). Proverbs 30:17 warns that ravens will 'pick out' the mocking eye. In Job 30:17, the word shifts to describe bones being pierced by relentless pain. Isaiah 51:1 uses the Pual passive for the quarry from which Israel was 'dug.' The French and Spanish glosses ('crevant,' 'sacar,' 'excavados') capture both the violent extraction and the quarrying senses.

Senses
1. bore out, gouge out, pick out To bore, gouge, or pick out forcefully, primarily describing the violent extraction of eyes. The Qal form appears in 1 Samuel 11:2 (Nahash's threat) and Proverbs 30:17 (ravens picking out the eye), while the Piel intensifies the action in Judges 16:21 (Samson's blinding) and Numbers 16:14 (a rhetorical accusation). Job 30:17 extends the imagery to bones being 'bored through' by disease. Isaiah 51:1 uniquely applies the Pual passive to quarrying stone, broadening the semantic range from violent bodily harm to excavation. Spanish 'excavados' (quarried) alongside 'sacar' (to extract) reflects this dual application across traditions.
