Fall, fall down (Aramaic) — to fall prostrate in worship, to topple, or to descend upon someone
The Aramaic verb נְפַל (nepal) means to fall or fall down, used almost exclusively in Daniel. Its most prominent usage describes falling prostrate before an idol: when the music sounds, all peoples must 'fall down and worship' Nebuchadnezzar's image (Dan 3:5-7, 10-11, 15). Nebuchadnezzar himself falls on his face before Daniel (Dan 2:46). The three friends fall bound into the furnace (Dan 3:23). A heavenly voice 'falls' upon the king as divine pronouncement (Dan 4:28). Daniel 7:20 uses it for horns falling before the little horn. Spanish 'caer' and French 'tomber' cover both physical and reverential senses.
