to come up, ascend; Aramaic loan-word for upward movement
This Aramaic verb, borrowed into Biblical Hebrew's later portions, describes upward motion or elevation. In Daniel's visions, it depicts beasts rising from the sea and a horn emerging among others. Ezra uses it for people coming up to Jerusalem. The verb can be causative (Haphel: to lift up, take up) as when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are brought up to the furnace opening. The Aramaic root emphasizes the direction and completion of ascent, whether literal (geographic, architectural) or symbolic (rising in vision, elevation in status).

Senses
1. sense 1 Daniel and Ezra use this verb for both visionary and concrete ascent. In Daniel 7:3, four beasts 'come up from the sea,' while in 7:8, a horn 'comes up' among the ten. The causative forms in Daniel 3:22 and 6:23 describe forcibly lifting people up to and from the fiery furnace and lions' den. Cross-linguistic glosses reflect this upward directionality: 'levantaron' (lifted up), 'sacado' (brought out/up), 'lifted-up.' The Aramaic origin suits the Persian-period setting of both books.
