Comfort, consolation, or compassionate feeling toward someone suffering
This noun describes both the comfort offered to those in distress and the internal stirring of compassion. Isaiah promises God will restore and give 'comfort' to mourners. Hosea uses it for God's internal conflict: 'my heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender'—the divine struggle between judgment and mercy.
