to growl (as a lion devouring prey) or groan (in suffering or anguish)
A vivid sound-word that captures two distinct registers of deep, guttural vocalization. When predators are in view, it denotes the low, rumbling growl of a lion over its prey — distinct from the roar (shaag) of the initial attack. Isaiah deploys it twice to portray Assyria's terrifying advance (Isa 5:29-30). In human contexts, it shifts to the groan of one in physical or emotional anguish, as in the regretful sufferer of Proverbs 5:11 and the silent mourners of Ezekiel 24:23.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The deep, sustained growl of a lion while feeding on its kill, distinct from the attacking roar. Spanish 'bramará' and 'ruge' capture the bestial rumble well. Used figuratively of Assyria as a devouring lion in Isaiah 5:29-30 and of a wicked ruler in Proverbs 28:15. 5×
