Hammers used for driving nails, pegs, or shaping metal in construction and craftsmanship
This term for hammers appears in contexts of building and idol-making. Solomon's temple was built with such reverence that no hammer was heard at the construction site—stones were pre-cut (1 Kgs 6). Isaiah and Jeremiah use the term when describing idol fabrication: the craftsman shapes metal with hammers and fastens it with nails. The hammer represents both creative craftsmanship and, ironically, the futile effort to make gods from raw materials. It's the tool for driving pegs (as with Jael's tent peg) and shaping resistant materials.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Hammers for construction or metalworking. First Kings 6:7 notes that in building the temple, 'neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron was heard' at the construction site. Isaiah 44:12 describes the metalworker: 'he works it with hammers and forges it.' Jeremiah 10:4 depicts idol-making: 'they fasten it with nails and with hammers so that it cannot move.' The consistent rendering across languages as 'hammer' or 'martillo' confirms the tool's basic identity as an implement for striking. 3×
