Confidence, trust; the object in which one trusts; a state of security or safety from danger.
Mivtach is the noun of result from batach ('to trust'), and its three senses track the full arc of the trust relationship — from the inner act of relying, to the outer person relied upon, to the resulting state of safety. In its most frequent use, mivtach names confidence itself: 'In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence' (Prov 14:26). Spanish distinguishes confianza (trust) from refugio (refuge), and French confiance from sécurité, revealing the breadth Hebrew packs into one noun.
Senses
1. trust, confidence — The abstract act of trusting or having confidence. This dominant sense (11 occurrences) centers on psalms and wisdom: 'In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence' (Prov 14:26), 'You are my trust from my youth' (Ps 71:5), and 'Blessed is the man whose trust is the LORD' (Jer 17:7). Spanish confianza and French confiance converge here. 11×

2. security, safety — The objective state of being secure or safe from danger. Isaiah 32:18 promises God's people 'secure dwellings' (miskenot mivtachim), and Job 18:14 describes the wicked torn from the 'security' of their tent. Spanish seguridad, French sécurité, and German Sicherheit shift from relational trust to objective safety. 2×

3. object of trust, refuge — The concrete object of trust — the person or thing in which confidence is placed. Job 8:14 compares the godless person's mivtach to a spider's web, and Jeremiah 2:37 warns that Israel's 'trusted ones' will fail. Spanish refugio and French sécurité (objective sense) distinguish this concrete referent from the abstract feeling of sense 1. 2×
