1. mocking, derision, scorn — A masculine noun denoting mockery, derision, ridicule, or scorn directed at a person or people. Used in communal laments to describe the contempt suffered by God's people: Israel has become a scorn and derision to those around them (Ps 44:13; 79:4; 123:4). In Job, the wicked drinks scoffing like water (Job 34:7), indicating brazen disregard for moral correction. The prophets employ it of the fate of a judged nation: Judah and Jerusalem become objects of mockery among the nations as divine punishment (Ezek 23:32; 36:4), and Hosea warns that the leaders' derision will be their undoing (Hos 7:16). All occurrences -- whether absolute, construct with article, or with pronominal suffix -- express the same concept of contemptuous ridicule, with syntactic variation but no semantic distinction. 7×
