lebab (Aramaic) -- heart, mind; the inner seat of thought, will, and emotion in biblical Aramaic
The Aramaic noun lebab corresponds exactly to the far more common Hebrew leb/lebab, designating the heart as the seat of intellect, will, and emotion. Its seven occurrences are confined to the Aramaic chapters of Daniel, where it describes the inner life of kings and visionary experiences. Nebuchadnezzar receives an animal's heart in place of a human one (Dan 4:16) -- a vivid image of mental derangement -- and later his heart is 'lifted up' in pride (Dan 5:20). Daniel interprets the king's secret thoughts, 'the thoughts of your heart' (Dan 2:30). In Daniel 7:4, the beast is given 'a heart of a man.' Spanish corazon, French coeur, and Arabic qalb all share the same metaphorical mapping of heart to mind that characterizes Semitic anthropology broadly.

Senses
1. heart, mind, inner self The inner self understood as the seat of thought, will, and emotion -- the Aramaic counterpart of Hebrew leb/lebab. In Daniel's Aramaic chapters it describes Nebuchadnezzar's mind being changed to an animal's (Dan 4:16), his heart being lifted in arrogance (Dan 5:20-21), Daniel's access to the king's secret thoughts (Dan 2:30), and a beast receiving human understanding (Dan 7:4). Spanish corazon, French coeur, and the broader Semitic concept (Arabic qalb, 'heart') all confirm the universal heart-as-mind metaphor. The word functions identically to its Hebrew equivalent, with no semantic distinction arising from the language shift.
