V-Nifal-Imperf-3ms  |  3× in 1 sense
to get understanding, encourage, or captivate the heart
A denominative verb from לֵבָב (heart), used in two quite different senses. In Job 11:12, the Niphal means 'to get sense/understanding'—will a hollow man acquire a heart? In Song of Songs 4:9, the Piel means 'you have stolen/captured my heart' or possibly 'you have encouraged me'—the lover's passionate declaration to his beloved. The dual usage shows how the heart encompasses both intellect and affection.

Senses
1. sense 1 Job 11:12 poses a rhetorical question using Niphal imperfect: 'shall an empty man get understanding?' (וְאִישׁ נָבוּב יִלָּבֵב), implying intellectual impossibility—as unlikely as a wild donkey's colt being born human. Song 4:9 (×2) has the lover exclaim, 'You have stolen my heart' (לִבַּבְתִּנִי), repeated for emphasis, '...with one glance of your eyes.' Some interpret this Piel as 'encouraged/emboldened' rather than 'ravished,' though most translations favor the romantic 'captured.' Spanish 'robaste el corazón,' French 'ravi le cœur' support the amorous reading.
