To be in heat, breed (of animals); to be warm, get hot (of persons/things); (Piel) to conceive a child.
A root whose meaning radiates from the basic sensation of heat. In its most frequent use, it describes animals going into heat -- Jacob's breeding strategy with Laban's flocks depends on when the animals 'were in heat' at the watering troughs (Gen 30:38-41; 31:10). German Brnstigwerden ('going into rut') and Spanish encenderse en celo ('to kindle in heat') both capture this zoological specificity. The same root applies to ordinary physical warmth: old King David could not 'get warm' (1 Kgs 1:1), and two lying together 'will be hot' (Eccl 4:11). A single Piel occurrence in Psalm 51:5 elevates the meaning to human conception: 'in sin my mother conceived me' -- a transfer from animal breeding-heat to the theological mystery of human generation.
