weary, exhausted, wearisome
Physically or mentally exhausted, weary from labor or hardship. The adjective describes both people worn down by exertion and things that are wearisome or exhausting. Deuteronomy uses it for Israel when attacked by Amalek—weary from wilderness travel. 2 Samuel applies it to David when fleeing Absalom, exhausted and vulnerable. Ecclesiastes employs it philosophically: all words and things are wearisome, full of labor beyond telling. The term captures the depleted state after prolonged effort, whether physical fatigue or existential exhaustion.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Weary, exhausted, or wearisome. Deuteronomy 25:18 recalls Amalek attacking Israel when they were 'weary and exhausted' in the wilderness. 2 Samuel 17:2 describes David as 'weary and weak-handed,' vulnerable to attack. Ecclesiastes 1:8 declares philosophically 'all things are wearisome'—everything is full of toil. The semantic range covers physical fatigue (first two contexts) and existential wearisomeness (Ecclesiastes). Spanish cansado/fatigoso, French fatigué, English weary/wearisome all capture this exhaustion, whether physical or metaphysical. 3×
