Hivite — one of the Canaanite peoples listed among the pre-Israelite inhabitants of the land of Canaan
Chivvi (the Hivite) designates one of the traditional seven Canaanite nations whom Israel was to dispossess upon entering the land. The name may derive from a root meaning 'village' or 'tent-dweller,' though the etymology remains disputed. Hivites appear in nearly every standard promise-and-conquest list from Exodus through Joshua (Exod 3:8; Deut 7:1; Josh 9:1; 24:11), and they surface in two memorable narrative moments: Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite who violated Dinah (Gen 34:2), and the Gibeonites, identified as Hivites, who tricked Joshua into a treaty by pretending to be distant travelers (Josh 9:7; 11:19). The Septuagint renders the name as Heuaios. In later history, Solomon conscripted Hivite descendants for forced labor (1 Kgs 9:20). Spanish 'heveo/hivita,' French 'Hivvite/Hevien,' and German 'Chiwwiter/Hewiter' all transliterate variously.
Senses
1. Hivite (ethnic group) — The Hivites, a Canaanite ethnic group listed among the pre-Israelite nations 'begotten' by Canaan in the Table of Nations (Gen 10:17; 1 Chr 1:15). They appear in virtually every conquest catalogue (Exod 3:8; 23:23; Deut 7:1; Josh 3:10; 12:8). Specific Hivite figures include Shechem son of Hamor (Gen 34:2) and the Gibeonites who secured a covenant through deception (Josh 9:7; 11:19). Solomon later subjected their remnant to forced labor (1 Kgs 9:20). The multilingual glosses — Spanish 'heveo,' French 'Hevien,' German 'Hewiter' — reflect varied transliteration traditions. 25×
