Conj-w | V-Qal-ConsecImperf-3fs  |  5× in 1 sense
beat off (olives from a tree); beat out (grain by hand with a stick), as distinct from large-scale threshing
Used for small-scale harvesting, this verb describes knocking olives from branches or beating out grain with a rod rather than threshing on an open floor with cattle. Gideon was beating out wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites (Judg 6:11), and Ruth beat out what she had gleaned (Ruth 2:17). In Isaiah 27:12 the image turns figurative: Yahweh will beat out the harvest from the Euphrates to the Brook of Egypt, gathering Israel one by one. Spanish 'golpear/sacudir' and French 'battre' consistently reflect the percussive, manual action.

Senses
1. sense 1 To beat off fruit (especially olives) from a tree by striking the branches with a stick, as prescribed in Deut 24:20. Spanish 'sacudir' ('to shake loose') captures the dislodging action. This is a harvesting technique distinct from picking by hand, intended to quickly gather remaining produce.
