A song or psalm of praise; a musical composition celebrating God or expressing triumph.
Derived from the root zamar ('to sing, make music'), this noun denotes a song or psalm — especially one of praise or worship. David is famously called the 'sweet singer of Israel's songs' (2 Sam 23:1), and the Psalms employ it for joyful worship (Ps 95:2, 119:54). In Isaiah it can also refer to a hostile song of triumph (Isa 25:5), showing the word covers the full range of composed vocal music, from devotional hymn to victory chant.
Senses
1. song, psalm (musical composition) — A song, psalm, or musical composition — particularly one of praise or worship. The English 'songs' and Spanish 'canticos' consistently point to vocal compositions. Used of David's psalms (2 Sam 23:1), nighttime songs from God (Job 35:10), shouts of worship (Ps 95:2), statutes treasured as songs (Ps 119:54), and even the triumphant song of ruthless oppressors (Isa 25:5). The French 'chant' likewise captures the idea of a sung piece rather than mere speech. 6×
