הַיָּה H1962
calamity, disaster (Ketiv form, likely textual error for hawwah)
This word appears only in the Ketiv (written text) of Job 6:2, where the Qere (reading tradition) has 'hawwah' (calamity). Both forms mean destruction or disaster, and most scholars see the Ketiv as a scribal error for the expected word. Job is pleading for God to weigh his grief and calamity together in a balance—his bitter words are justified by overwhelming disaster. The textual variant doesn't change the meaning: Job's calamity is massive, warranting his anguished complaint.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The bracketed glosses indicate the Ketiv/Qere variants—the written and read forms of 'my calamity' in Job 6:2. Both occurrences in the verse are textual notes, not separate uses. Job asks, 'O that my grief were weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!' The weight metaphor emphasizes the crushing burden Job bears. Whether spelled one way or another, the word denotes the totality of Job's suffering, which in his view justifies his passionate lament. 2×
