Resounding music, meditation, musing; from quiet reflection of the heart to instrumental melody.
A richly layered noun spanning the audible and the inward. On one end it denotes resounding instrumental music played on the lyre (Ps 92:3), and on the other, the quiet meditation of the heart before God (Ps 19:14). In Lamentations 3:62, it takes a darker turn, describing the hostile plotting and murmuring of enemies. The term even appears as a possible musical or liturgical direction alongside Selah (Ps 9:16). Spanish 'meditación' and English 'meditation' capture the reflective sense, while 'Higgaion' is often transliterated when it functions as a performance cue.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Resounding music, meditation, musing, or plotting — covering a semantic arc from audible instrumental sound to silent inner reflection to hostile scheming. In Ps 92:3, it describes the resonant music of a lyre (עֲלֵי הִגָּיוֹן בְּכִנּוֹר). In Ps 19:14, it is the meditation of the heart (הֶגְיוֹן לִבִּי) offered alongside spoken words as worship. Ps 9:16 pairs it with Selah as what appears to be a musical or liturgical notation, often left transliterated as 'Higgaion.' In Lam 3:62, the same word darkens to mean the scheming or murmuring of enemies (וְהֶגְיוֹנָם עָלַי). Spanish 'meditación' and French 'murmure' each capture different facets of this versatile term. 4×
