remove, take away; drive out or send into exile
This verb appears in wisdom and prophetic literature with the sense of removing or driving away. Proverbs uses it twice for removing dross from silver and the wicked from a king's presence (Prov 25:4–5), establishing a metaphor of purification. Isaiah 27:8 is debated—either God 'removed' (sent into exile) his people with a harsh wind, or he 'winnowed' them. The multilingual glosses (Spanish quita, arrojó; French enlever) support the core idea of forceful removal or expulsion.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The verb denotes forceful removal in all three contexts: purging impurities (Prov 25:4), driving away the wicked (Prov 25:5), and sending into exile or sifting away (Isa 27:8). The cross-lingual evidence points to active expulsion or separation, whether physical, moral, or judicial. 3×
