he'ach -- Aha!; an exclamatory interjection expressing malicious joy, scorn, or triumphant satisfaction
The interjection he'ach ('Aha!') is a sharp exclamatory cry expressing gloating satisfaction, scornful joy, or malicious triumph over another's misfortune. It appears almost exclusively in the Psalms and prophets, placed in the mouths of enemies and adversaries. The psalmist's foes cry 'Aha! Aha!' as they witness his downfall (Ps 35:21, 25; 40:15; 70:3). Ezekiel hurls it back against the nations that gloated over Jerusalem's destruction and over Tyre's collapse (Ezek 25:3; 26:2; 36:2). In Job 39:25, uniquely, it describes the war-horse's eager snorting cry amid trumpets -- 'Aha!' -- capturing not scorn but fierce exhilaration. Spanish aja, French ha, and German ha/aha all render this visceral exclamation.
