N-ms  |  4× in 1 sense
Cessation, quiet, rest; silence or stillness, especially in pleas that God not remain inactive.
Denotes a state of stillness, quiet, or cessation. It appears most memorably in urgent prayers asking God not to keep silent—'do not hold your peace' (Ps 83:1)—and in Isaiah's watchmen who are told to give God no rest until Jerusalem is established (Isa 62:6–7). Hezekiah's poignant phrase 'in the quiet of my days' (Isa 38:10) uses it to evoke the undisturbed prime of life. The multilingual evidence splits: English and Spanish render 'rest/silence,' while some German and French versions transliterate the Hebrew, reflecting the term's interpretive difficulty.

Senses
1. sense 1 Quiet, rest, silence, cessation — a stillness that may be peaceful or troubling depending on context. In Ps 83:1, the psalmist begs God to break his silence (אַל־דֳּמִי לָךְ), paralleled with 'do not be deaf' and 'do not be still.' Isaiah 62:6–7 uses it twice: the watchmen must not be quiet, and must give God no rest. In Isa 38:10, Hezekiah speaks of 'the quiet of my days' (בִּדְמִי יָמַי), referring to the calm midpoint of life cut short. Spanish 'silencio/descanso' and English 'rest/silence' both capture the dual register of peaceful repose and unsettling inactivity.
