To hotly pursue, chase with burning intensity; also: to burn, kindle, be inflamed
A vivid verb that fuses the imagery of fire with relentless pursuit. In its 'chase' sense, dalaq describes Laban hotly pursuing Jacob (Gen 31:36), the Israelites chasing the Philistines after Goliath's fall (1 Sam 17:53), and enemy pursuers who are 'swifter than eagles' hounding the fugitives of Jerusalem (Lam 4:19). In its 'burn' sense, it describes literal fire kindling and consuming (Ezek 24:10; Obad 1:18) and metaphorical burning -- wine that 'inflames' (Isa 5:11) and 'burning lips' that mask a wicked heart (Prov 26:23). The two senses are not unrelated: to pursue 'hotly' is to chase with burning ardor, and the semantic bridge between fire and passionate pursuit runs through the heart of the word.
Senses
1. pursue hotly, chase — To hotly pursue, chase with burning eagerness or intensity. Used of aggressive, relentless chasing: Laban demands 'why have you hotly pursued me?' (Gen 31:36), the Israelites chase fleeing Philistines (1 Sam 17:53), and Jerusalem's persecutors are 'swifter than eagles -- they chased us' (Lam 4:19). Spanish renders both 'perseguir' (pursue) and 'nos-persiguieron' (they pursued us); the Psalms usage (Ps 10:2) applies it to the wicked who 'hotly pursue' the poor. The word conveys not mere following but fierce, burning determination in the chase. 5×

2. burn, kindle, be inflamed — To burn, kindle, or be inflamed -- both literal fire and metaphorical burning. Obadiah 1:18 has the house of Joseph burning among Edom ('and they shall burn among them'), and Ezekiel 24:10 commands 'kindle the fire' in the judgment-pot allegory. Metaphorically, Isaiah 5:11 describes wine that 'inflames' revelers, and Proverbs 26:23 pairs 'burning lips' (sephatayim dolqim) with a wicked heart -- fervent speech concealing malice. English distinguishes 'burning' from 'inflames'; Spanish uses 'ardientes' (burning) and 'enciende' (kindles). The Hiphil causative yedliqem in Isa 5:11 makes explicit the transitive sense: wine kindles or inflames those who chase after it. 4×
