To fly swiftly, swoop, dart through the air; used of eagles, invading armies, and God in theophany.
A vivid verb depicting rapid, swooping flight—the kind of terrifying descent an eagle makes on its prey. In Deuteronomy 28:49 it describes a distant nation swooping like an eagle upon disobedient Israel, while in Jeremiah 48:40 and 49:22 the same eagle imagery portrays divine judgment spreading its wings over Moab and Edom. Most strikingly, Psalm 18:10 uses it of God himself soaring on the wings of the wind during theophany. The Spanish volará ('will fly') and French voler ('to fly') capture the aerial speed, while English 'swoop' and 'soar' reflect the predatory intensity.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To fly swiftly or swoop down, depicting rapid darting motion through the air. Used in military simile of an eagle-like nation descending on Israel (Deut 28:49), of divine judgment swooping over Moab and Edom with outspread wings (Jer 48:40; 49:22), and most dramatically of Yahweh soaring on the wings of the wind in theophany (Ps 18:10). The verb consistently evokes predatory speed and overwhelming aerial power. 4×
