winepress, a vat or installation for treading grapes
The standard Hebrew term for a winepress, the installation where grapes were trodden to extract juice. It appears in both literal and powerfully figurative contexts. Gideon beats wheat in a winepress to hide it from Midian (Judg 6:11), and Nehemiah observes Sabbath-breaking at the winepresses (Neh 13:15). Prophetically, the winepress becomes a symbol of divine judgment: Isaiah pictures God treading the winepress alone with garments stained red (Isa 63:2), Lamentations depicts the LORD treading a winepress over Jerusalem (Lam 1:15), and Joel calls warriors to tread because the press is full (Joel 3:13).
Senses
1. sense 1 — A winepress, the agricultural installation where grapes are crushed by treading. Used literally for grape processing (Judg 6:11; Neh 13:15) and as a potent metaphor for divine judgment, where God treads the nations like grapes (Isa 63:2; Lam 1:15; Joel 3:13). Spanish 'lagar' and English 'winepress' uniformly render this meaning. The figurative usage carried forward into Revelation 14:19-20. 5×
