A noun with two distinct semantic poles. In the Exodus slave laws (21:3–4), it appears in the phrase begappo ('by his body/by himself'), meaning a man enters or leaves servitude alone, without wife or children — the Spanish 'soltería' (bachelorhood) captures this self-contained sense well. In Proverbs 9:3, however, it shifts to 'heights' or 'elevated points' (gappe merome qaret, 'the highest points of the city'), where Lady Wisdom calls from the city's summit. The word is cognate with the later Hebrew/Aramaic guf ('body'), and the semantic leap from 'body' to 'height' may reflect the idea of a body's upright stature.
