Redemption, right of redemption — the legal act or right of buying back land, persons, or property
A feminine noun from the root gā'al ('to redeem, act as kinsman-redeemer'), denoting the act, right, or price of redemption. Its primary domain is the Jubilee legislation of Leviticus 25, where it governs the buying back of ancestral land (v. 24), houses in walled cities (vv. 29-31), Levitical property (v. 32), and persons sold into servitude (vv. 48-52). The calculated 'price of redemption' (ge'ullātō) is proportional to the years remaining until Jubilee. In Ruth 4:6-7, the kinsman-redeemer's right of ge'ullāh becomes a narrative pivot when the nearer kinsman declines. Jeremiah 32:7-8 invokes the mishpaṭ hagge'ullāh ('right of redemption') as Jeremiah buys his cousin's field at Anathoth — an enacted sign of hope during the siege. Ezekiel 11:15 uses it more broadly for 'kinship' itself.

Senses
1. redemption, right of redemption The legal right, act, or price of redeeming property or persons, rooted in Israel's kinship-based land tenure system. Concentrated in Leviticus 25 (eight of fourteen occurrences), where it governs redemption of fields (v. 24), houses (vv. 29, 31-32), and enslaved persons (vv. 48, 51-52), with the redemption price calculated by years to Jubilee. In Ruth 4:6-7, ge'ullāh denotes the kinsman-redeemer's right that drives the plot resolution. Jeremiah 32:7-8 uses it as a prophetic sign of restoration. Renderings (eng: redemption, spa: redención, fra: rachat, deu: Lösung) confirm the legal-economic semantic core. Ezekiel 11:15 may extend the term to kinship itself. 14×
