Conj-w | V-Qal-Prtcpl-msc | 3fs  |  2× in 1 sense
to lay waste, devastate, make desolate; intensive form emphasizing thorough destruction
This intensive verbal form conveys complete devastation and desolation, used of divine judgment against the earth and against cities. Isaiah depicts the LORD himself as the subject, laying waste to the whole earth in cosmic judgment. Nahum employs it in a threefold accumulation of destruction words describing Nineveh's utter ruin. The Poel or intensive stem underscores not mere damage but total, thorough devastation that leaves nothing intact.

Senses
1. sense 1 An intensive form meaning to utterly devastate or lay completely waste (Isaiah 24:1; Nahum 2:10). The verbal form appears in contexts of total destruction, with God as subject in Isaiah and as part of a triple intensification in Nahum ('empty, desolate, and devastated'). The bracketed forms in some translations indicate uncertainty about the exact parsing, as the form could be Qal or Poel participle, though the intensive meaning is clear from context.
