Worn-out clothing or rags, mentioned only in Jeremiah's account of rescuing the prophet from a cistern. Ebed-melech gathers 'worn-out clothes and rags' from the palace storehouse and lowers them to Jeremiah to put under his armpits as padding before being pulled up by ropes (Jeremiah 38:11-12). The term denotes fabric too deteriorated for regular use but still useful for padding or binding. The repetition ('worn-out' appears three times) emphasizes the makeshift compassion shown to the imprisoned prophet.
