Contempt, scorn — the disdainful dismissal of a person or thing regarded as worthless or shameful
The noun בּוּז (buz) denotes the attitude and expression of contempt — the scornful dismissal of someone deemed worthless. In the wisdom literature, Job describes how the prosperous heap contempt upon the stumbling (Job 12:5) and how even outcasts despise him (Job 12:21). He confesses fear of the contempt of the multitude (Job 31:34). The psalmist pleads to be delivered from contempt and reproach (Ps 31:18; 119:22) and cries out as one who has 'had more than enough of the scorn of those at ease' (Ps 123:3-4). Genesis 38:23 uses it more mildly — Judah prefers to let Tamar keep his pledge lest 'we become a contempt.' Spanish 'desprecio' and French 'mépris' both capture the social sting of dismissive scorn.

Senses
1. contempt, scorn Contempt, scorn, or disdainful dismissal directed at a person or thing considered worthless or shameful. Judah fears becoming 'a laughingstock' if his dealings with Tamar become public (Gen 38:23). Job's speeches are saturated with it: the prosperous pour contempt on the stumbling (Job 12:5), nobles are treated with contempt (Job 12:21), and Job fears public scorn (Job 31:34). The psalmist pleads for deliverance from the contempt of the proud and self-satisfied (Ps 31:18; 119:22; 123:3-4). Proverbs 12:8 warns that the twisted of heart will fall into contempt. Spanish 'desprecio' and English 'contempt' both convey the social and moral weight of the dismissal. 11×
