H0699 H0699
A latticed window or opening; used figuratively of the floodgates or sluices of heaven through which rain and blessing pour.
Refers to a latticed opening or window in a structure, such as a vent for smoke (Hos 13:3) or dove-cote openings (Isa 60:8). Most memorably, it denotes the 'windows of heaven' (Gen 7:11; 8:2) through which God unleashes the deluge or pours out blessing (Mal 3:10). The Spanish and French translations consistently render it with 'ventana/window' imagery, while the metaphorical extension in Ecclesiastes 12:3 compares dimming eyesight to latticed windows growing dark.
Senses
1. window, lattice, sluice — A latticed window, opening, or sluice — an aperture built into a wall or roof. Concretely, it appears as a smoke-vent (Hos 13:3) or dove-cote opening (Isa 60:8). Ecclesiastes 12:3 uses it metaphorically of aging eyes growing dim, as if the lattice-shutters of the body are closing. Most strikingly, the phrase אֲרֻבּוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם ('windows of heaven') describes the cosmic floodgates God opens — for catastrophic deluge in Genesis 7:11 and for overflowing blessing in Malachi 3:10. Spanish 'ventana' and English 'window' consistently capture the architectural sense across translations. 9×
