To store up, treasure, or appoint as treasurer — used of hoarding wealth, goods, or violence, and of appointing custodians.
A verb rooted in the idea of gathering and keeping in a storehouse. In 2 Kings 20:17 and Isaiah 39:6 Hezekiah is warned that everything his fathers stored up will be carried off to Babylon. Amos 3:10 accuses the wealthy of storing up violence and robbery in their palaces — a striking metaphorical extension. Isaiah 23:18 envisions Tyre's merchandise no longer being hoarded but flowing to those who dwell before the Lord. In Nehemiah 13:13 the Hiphil is used denominatively to mean 'appoint as treasurers.' Spanish 'atesoran' ('they treasure up') captures the acquisitive force well.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To lay up, store, or hoard, and by denominative extension to appoint someone over a storehouse. The Qal describes accumulating goods or wealth in storage — whether legitimately (2 Kgs 20:17 = Isa 39:6, the treasures Hezekiah's ancestors stored) or unjustly (Amos 3:10, storing up violence and plunder in fortified palaces). The Niphal in Isaiah 23:18 envisions Tyre's commerce no longer being stored away selfishly but devoted to God's people. The Hiphil in Nehemiah 13:13 is denominative from 'otsar' (treasury), meaning 'to appoint as treasurer.' Spanish 'atesoraron' and 'los que atesoran' preserve the treasury metaphor, while English helpfully distinguishes 'stored up' from 'appointed treasurers.' 5×
