Immer — priestly family name; a priestly course and its descendants from the temple through the post-exilic period
The name אִמֵּר (Immer) designates one of the twenty-four priestly courses organized under David (1 Chr 24:14) and the family descended from it. Members of the house of Immer appear throughout Israel's cultic history: serving in the pre-exilic temple (1 Chr 9:12; Jer 20:1, where Pashhur son of Immer is 'chief officer in the house of the LORD'), returning from Babylonian exile in significant numbers (Ezra 2:37; Neh 7:40 — over a thousand men), and dealing with the mixed-marriage crisis (Ezra 10:20). A locality called Immer is also mentioned among places from which returning exiles could not verify their Israelite ancestry (Ezra 2:59; Neh 7:61).
Senses
1. Immer (proper name) — A priestly family name tracing to the sixteenth of David's twenty-four priestly courses (1 Chr 24:14). Pashhur son of Immer served as chief temple officer and clashed with Jeremiah (Jer 20:1). The family returned from exile in large numbers — 1,052 men (Ezra 2:37; Neh 7:40) — and some were implicated in the foreign-wives controversy (Ezra 10:20). The name also appears as a place of uncertain location from which exiles returned without genealogical proof (Ezra 2:59; Neh 7:61). Spanish 'Imer' and English 'Immer' both transliterate the Hebrew. 10×
