To consent, agree; used only in the Niphal, expressing willing assent to a proposal
A verb occurring exclusively in the Niphal stem, conveying the idea of giving consent or agreeing to terms proposed by another party. Its four occurrences cluster around two episodes of negotiation. In Genesis 34:15, 22–23, Jacob's sons set circumcision as the condition under which they will consent to intermarriage with the Shechemites — a tense diplomatic exchange. In 2 Kings 12:8, the priests agree not to take silver from the people, yielding authority over temple repairs. The word always implies deliberate, reasoned assent rather than passive acquiescence.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To consent, agree to terms or conditions (Niphal only). The multilingual glosses converge tightly: English 'we-will-consent' and 'they-agreed,' Spanish 'consentiremos' and 'consintieron,' German 'zustimmen' (to agree), and French 'consent.' All four occurrences involve formal negotiation — three in the Shechem marriage negotiations (Gen 34:15, 22, 23) and one in the temple-revenue agreement (2 Kgs 12:8). The Niphal form suggests a reflexive dimension: the subject commits oneself to the agreement. 4×
