to delay, tarry, take a long time — to be slow in coming or to linger beyond expectation
Chronizo means to take time, to delay, or to tarry, derived from chronos ('time'). In the New Testament it appears exclusively in contexts of anticipated arrival — and the anxiety or complacency that waiting produces. The wicked servant says 'my master is delaying' and begins to abuse his fellow servants (Matt 24:48; Luke 12:45). The foolish virgins slumber because the bridegroom 'tarried' (Matt 25:5). The people wonder at Zechariah's delay in the temple (Luke 1:21). And Hebrews quotes Habakkuk: 'the coming one will come and will not delay' (Heb 10:37). Spanish 'tardar' and French 'tarder' share the same Latin root (tardare), neatly capturing the word's eschatological tension.
