Designates a Roman military officer commanding roughly one thousand soldiers, equivalent to the Latin tribunus militum. In the New Testament, this figure appears most prominently in Acts 21–23, where the chiliarch Claudius Lysias arrests Paul in Jerusalem, rescues him from a mob, and transfers him under armed escort to Caesarea. The term also surfaces at Mark 6:21 among Herod's dinner guests and in John 18:12 during Jesus' arrest. Spanish comandante and German Oberste both highlight the command authority this rank carried.
