χᾰλάω G5465
To let down, lower by rope or mechanism; to slacken or release downward.
The verb chaláō means to lower or let down something by loosening a rope or cord. It appears in vivid New Testament scenes: friends lowering a paralytic through a hole in the roof (Mark 2:4), Peter letting down fishing nets at Jesus' command (Luke 5:4-5), and disciples lowering Paul in a basket through a wall opening to escape Damascus (Acts 9:25). In Acts 27:17, sailors lower the sea anchor during a storm. Spanish descolgando and French descendre both capture the controlled downward motion that defines every usage.
Senses
1. let down, lower — To let down or lower by rope, cord, or similar means — always denoting a controlled descent of a person or object. The word carries a strong physical concreteness: a paralytic lowered through a roof opening (Mark 2:4), fishing nets cast into deep water (Luke 5:4-5), Paul lowered in a basket over a city wall (Acts 9:25), and nautical gear lowered during a storm (Acts 27:17). French descendre and Spanish bajan both reflect this consistent 'downward release' motion. 7×
