V-PPA-NMS  |  1× in 1 sense
to imprison, throw into prison, incarcerate
This verb means to imprison someone, to throw them into custody. Paul uses it in Acts when recounting his pre-conversion persecution of Christians: he went from synagogue to synagogue imprisoning believers. The word derives from 'phylax' (guard, prison) and carries the official connotation of legal imprisonment rather than mere confinement. In the ancient world, imprisonment was often a holding measure before trial or punishment rather than the punishment itself.

Senses
1. sense 1 To place someone in prison or custody. Paul uses the participial form in Acts 22:19 when defending himself before the Jerusalem crowd, describing his former activity: 'I was imprisoning and beating in every synagogue those who believed in you' (referring to Jesus). The Spanish 'encarcelando' and English 'imprisoning' accurately convey the continuous action. This was part of Paul's systematic persecution before his Damascus road encounter.
