φρουρ-έω G5432
To guard, keep watch over, protect; to garrison or keep secure under protective custody.
A military term meaning to stand guard, garrison, or keep under protective watch. In classical Greek it described soldiers patrolling a territory or guarding a fortress. Paul uses it of the governor's troops guarding Damascus to seize him (2 Cor 11:32) and of the law keeping Israel under watch before faith came (Gal 3:23). Philippians 4:7 transforms the military image beautifully: God's peace will garrison your hearts and minds. First Peter 1:5 speaks of believers being guarded by God's power. Spanish guardados and French garder preserve the protective-custody sense across traditions.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To guard, garrison, or keep under protective watch -- originally a military term for stationing sentries. In 2 Corinthians 11:32 it describes soldiers guarding the city of Damascus to arrest Paul. Galatians 3:23 uses it metaphorically for the law holding Israel in custody before faith was revealed. The image turns warmly in Philippians 4:7, where God's peace will phroureō (garrison) believers' hearts and minds, and in 1 Peter 1:5, where God's power guards believers for salvation. The Spanish guardados and French garder consistently reflect the protective dimension. 4×
