Visible, manifest, openly known; in Paul, 'outward' as opposed to what is hidden or inward.
From the verb phainō ('to shine, appear'), phaneros describes what is plainly visible or openly known. Mark uses it of Jesus' fame becoming 'manifest' to Herod (Mark 6:14), and the Synoptic parables insist that nothing hidden will fail to become phaneron (Mark 4:22; Luke 8:17). Paul deploys the word extensively — the works of the flesh are 'evident' (Gal 5:19), and his imprisonment has become 'known' throughout the praetorian guard (Phil 1:13). A distinctive Pauline use in Romans 2:28 contrasts 'outward' Jewishness (en tō phanerō) with true circumcision of the heart, a nuance Spanish captures as 'visible' versus the deeper, hidden reality.

2. outward, external — Outward, external, pertaining to what is visible on the surface as opposed to what is inward or hidden. This specialized use appears in Romans 2:28, where Paul argues that 'the one who is a Jew en tō phanerō' — outwardly, in visible flesh-circumcision — is not the true Jew. The contrast with the hidden (en tō kryptō) dimension gives phaneros a spatial, almost physical nuance that the broader 'manifest' sense does not carry.
