ὑποστέλλω G5288
To shrink back, withdraw, hold back; to draw back from declaring or doing something out of timidity or cowardice.
Conveys the idea of pulling back, retreating, or holding something in reserve, often with an undertone of cowardice or self-protective concealment. In Acts 20:20 and 20:27 Paul insists he did not 'shrink back' from declaring the full counsel of God to the Ephesians. Galatians 2:12 describes Peter 'withdrawing' from table fellowship with Gentiles when the circumcision party arrived. Hebrews 10:38 warns that if anyone 'shrinks back,' God's soul has no pleasure in that person. The Spanish 'retraerse' and French 'reculer' both capture the backward movement — a retreat from conviction under social pressure.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To draw back, shrink away, or withhold out of fear or social pressure, failing to stand firm in conviction. Paul twice insists he never shrank back from declaring truth (Acts 20:20,27), while Gal 2:12 shows Peter withdrawing from Gentile fellowship under pressure from the circumcision faction. Heb 10:38 frames shrinking back as the opposite of living by faith. The Spanish 'retraerse' and French 'reculer' vividly convey the backward retreat, and the German 'zurückziehen' (pull back) captures the self-protective withdrawal. 4×
