ὑπήκοος G5255
obedient, submissive; disposed to obey and comply with authority or direction
This adjective describes one who hearkens to and obeys another, either as a character quality (obedient disposition) or a status (being subject to authority). It can take a genitive (obedient to) or dative (submissive to) construction. Classical Greek used it for subjects obedient to rulers, students to teachers, or phenomena responsive to natural laws. The New Testament emphasizes willing obedience as a virtue—not mere external compliance but genuine submission of will. All three occurrences involve human obedience to God or divinely appointed leadership.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Acts 7:39 describes Israel's wilderness generation as unwilling to be "obedient" (hupēkooi) to Moses, rejecting his God-appointed leadership. Second Corinthians 2:9 reveals Paul's purpose in writing—to test whether the Corinthians are "obedient" (hupēkooi) in everything, responsive to apostolic authority. Philippians 2:8 describes Christ becoming "obedient" (hupēkoos) to the point of death on a cross—the ultimate submission to the Father's will. The Spanish obediente(s), French obéissant, and German forms of hupēkoos all convey the responsive, submissive character. The range spans negative (Israel's disobedience), positive (church obedience), and supreme (Christ's obedience), showing obedience as the proper response to legitimate authority, perfectly modeled by Jesus himself. 3×
