tris -- three times, thrice; a numeral adverb marking threefold repetition
The numeral adverb tris ('three times, thrice') marks threefold repetition and carries particular narrative weight in the New Testament. Its most memorable use is Jesus' prediction and fulfillment of Peter's threefold denial: 'before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times' (Matt 26:34, 75; Mark 14:30, 72; Luke 22:34, 61; John 13:38). This triple denial is later answered by the triple restoration at the Sea of Tiberias: 'Simon, do you love me?' asked three times (John 21:17, using tris implicitly). Paul reports being beaten with rods three times and shipwrecked three times (2 Cor 11:25), and Peter's vision of the unclean animals was shown to him three times (Acts 10:16; 11:10). Spanish tres veces, French trois fois, and German dreimal all render it consistently.
