Quickly, hastily, soon — adverb of rapidity in time, urging promptness or warning against rash speed
The adverb ταχέως (tacheos) means 'quickly,' 'speedily,' or 'soon,' carrying both a positive sense of urgency and a cautionary sense of rashness depending on context. When Jesus tells the servant to go out 'quickly' into the streets (Luke 14:21), the word conveys divine urgency. But when Paul marvels that the Galatians are 'so quickly' deserting the gospel (Gal 1:6), the speed is alarming. Similarly, Paul warns Timothy not to lay hands on anyone 'hastily' (1 Tim 5:22). The same root yields the comparative tachion and superlative tachista. Spanish 'pronto/rápidamente' and French 'vite/rapidement' cover both nuances.
Senses
1. quickly, hastily, soon — An adverb meaning 'quickly, speedily, soon,' used either positively for urgent promptness (Luke 14:21, the master's command to gather guests quickly; 2 Tim 4:9, Paul's plea for Timothy to come soon; Phil 2:19, hoping to send Timothy shortly) or negatively for alarming or reckless haste (Gal 1:6, deserting the gospel so quickly; 1 Tim 5:22, not laying hands on anyone too hastily; 2 Thess 2:2, not being quickly unsettled). Spanish 'pronto' and German 'schnell' both serve for the temporal urgency, while context alone disambiguates commendable speed from dangerous rashness. 10×
