τάσσω G5021
To arrange, appoint, assign to a position or task; in the middle voice, to devote oneself to a service.
Rooted in the military language of marshalling troops into formation, this verb carries into the New Testament the broader sense of placing someone or something into an appointed order. A centurion describes himself as 'set under authority' (Matt 8:9; Luke 7:8), and the Jerusalem council 'appointed' delegates (Acts 15:2). The middle voice yields a reflexive nuance: the household of Stephanas 'devoted themselves' to serving the saints (1 Cor 16:15). Spanish 'designar' and 'dedicarse' mirror this active-middle distinction well. The theological weight appears in Acts 13:48 where those 'appointed' to eternal life believed.
Senses
1. appoint, arrange, designate — To appoint, assign, or arrange someone in a role, position, or task by authoritative decision. Includes military subordination (Matt 8:9, Luke 7:8), official delegation (Acts 15:2), and divine appointment (Acts 13:48, where those 'ordained' to eternal life believed). German 'einordnen' captures the ordering dimension. The passive 'being appointed' in Acts 22:10 and 28:23 reflects arrangements made for Paul by others or by God. 8×

2. devote oneself to — Middle voice: to devote or dedicate oneself to a task or service. In 1 Cor 16:15 the household of Stephanas 'arranged themselves for'—that is, voluntarily committed themselves to—the ministry of the saints. Spanish 'se dedicaron' precisely mirrors the reflexive Greek middle. This sense preserves the root idea of ordered arrangement but turns it inward as a self-imposed commitment. 1×
