συνεσθίω G4906
To eat together with someone; to share a meal as an act of fellowship and social acceptance.
In the ancient Mediterranean world, sharing a meal was far more than consuming food — it was a declaration of social acceptance and fellowship. Every NT use of this verb carries that weight. Jesus 'eats with' tax collectors and sinners (Luke 15:2), scandalizing the Pharisees. Peter ate with Cornelius and his household (Acts 10:41), then faced criticism for eating with the uncircumcised (Acts 11:3). Paul forbids eating with an unrepentant brother (1 Cor 5:11), and Peter's withdrawal from table fellowship with Gentiles provoked the Antioch crisis (Gal 2:12).
Senses
1. sense 1 — To eat together with someone, signifying social acceptance, fellowship, and communal solidarity. In the NT, every occurrence is theologically charged: Jesus' table fellowship with sinners (Luke 15:2) expressed divine welcome; the apostles eating with the risen Christ confirmed their witness (Acts 10:41); and disputes over who may eat with whom drove pivotal moments in early church history (Acts 11:3; Gal 2:12). Paul's prohibition in 1 Cor 5:11 shows the exclusionary power of withholding shared meals. Spanish 'comer con/junto' and French 'manger avec/ensemble' consistently mark the communal dimension. 5×
