synagoge -- synagogue; the Jewish assembly or its meeting place for worship, prayer, and Scripture reading
The feminine noun synagoge, from syn- ('together') and ago ('to bring'), denotes both the gathered assembly and the physical building where Jews met for worship, prayer, and Scripture reading. By the first century it had become the center of Jewish communal life in both Palestine and the Diaspora. Jesus launched his public ministry in synagogues (Matt 4:23; Luke 4:16-21), Paul began his missionary work in them (Acts 13:5; 17:1-2), and they serve as settings for healings, controversies, and persecutions. Spanish sinagoga, French synagogue, and German Synagoge all derive from the same Greek compound.

Senses
1. synagogue, place of Jewish assembly The Jewish place of assembly for worship, prayer, and Torah reading. Jesus teaches and heals in synagogues throughout Galilee (Matt 4:23; 9:35), Paul visits them first in each new city (Acts 13:5; 17:1-2), and they become sites of both proclamation and persecution. Spanish sinagoga, French synagogue, and German Synagoge are direct Greek borrowings confirming a single referent. 56×
