To gather or bring together; of people assembling; of welcoming strangers with hospitality
Built from σύν ('together') and ἄγω ('lead'), this verb pictures the active drawing-together of people or things into one place. It appears across the Gospels for both crowds assembling around Jesus and deliberate acts of collecting — harvesting grain into barns (Matt 3:12; 6:26) or summoning councils (Matt 2:4). A striking extended sense emerges in Matthew 25:35, where 'gathering in' a stranger becomes an act of hospitality: Spanish 'me recogisteis' ('you took me in') reveals the warmth embedded in this word, well beyond mere physical assembly.

Senses
1. assemble together (intransitive) The intransitive or middle/passive sense: people assembling, coming together, or being gathered as a group. Large crowds 'gathered together' around Jesus (Matt 13:2), the Pharisees 'assembled' to question him (Matt 22:34, 41), and early believers met in gathered communities. The Spanish 'fueron reunidos' / 'habiéndose reunido' and German 'versammelt' all capture this reflexive quality — the gathering happens to or among the subjects themselves. Jesus' promise in Matt 18:20 ('where two or three are gathered') makes this sense theologically foundational. 30×

2. gather or collect (transitive) The transitive, active sense: to gather, collect, or bring together people or things by deliberate action. Herod 'gathered' the chief priests (Matt 2:4), the angels will 'gather' the elect (Matt 24:31), and farmers gather wheat into barns (Matt 3:12; 6:26). The Spanish 'Recoged' (imperative 'Gather!') and the English 'I will gather' highlight the agent's initiative. Jesus uses the farming metaphor powerfully: 'He who does not gather with me scatters' (Matt 12:30). 26×

3. take in, show hospitality An extended figurative sense meaning to take in, welcome, or show hospitality to a stranger — found exclusively in Jesus' parable of the sheep and goats (Matt 25:35, 38, 43). Here 'gathering' someone means receiving them into one's home and care. The Spanish 'me recogisteis' ('you took me in') and the English 'you gathered me' shift the spatial metaphor from assembling a crowd to sheltering an individual. This sense uniquely ties physical gathering to moral obligation and compassion.
