symphoneo -- to agree, harmonize, be in accord; from syn + phone ('sound together')
Built from syn ('together') and phone ('voice, sound'), symphoneo literally means 'to sound together in harmony' -- the root behind English 'symphony.' In the New Testament it consistently denotes reaching agreement or being in accord. Jesus promises that 'if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them' (Matt 18:19). In the parable of the vineyard laborers, the master 'agreed with' the workers for a denarius a day (Matt 20:2, 13). Luke 5:36 uses it of cloth patches that do not 'match,' and Acts 5:9 asks why Ananias and Sapphira 'agreed together' to test the Spirit. French s'accorder and Spanish acordar neatly mirror the musical-to-social harmony trajectory.

Senses
1. agree, be in accord To come to mutual agreement, harmonize, or correspond -- whether in the context of prayer partnership (Matt 18:19, where two agreeing believers receive what they ask), contractual terms (Matt 20:2, 13, the vineyard wage agreement), material compatibility (Luke 5:36, a patch that does not 'match'), or conspiratorial accord (Acts 5:9, Sapphira agreeing with Ananias to deceive). The etymological image of voices sounding together underlies every usage. French s'accorder and Spanish acordar reflect both the musical origin and the social extension, confirming a single cohesive sense of mutual concord.
