συμβαίνω G4819
To happen, occur, come about: events befalling a person or coming to pass.
Originally meaning 'to walk together' or 'to meet,' symbaino evolved into a standard Greek term for events happening or coming to pass. In the NT it consistently describes noteworthy occurrences. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus discuss 'the things that had happened' (Luke 24:14). Paul recounts 'the things that happened to me' through trials (Acts 20:19). Peter urges believers not to be surprised at the 'fiery trial happening' to them (1 Pet 4:12). Paul draws typological lessons from events that 'happened' to Israel as examples for the church (1 Cor 10:11). The word frames events as significant, not merely incidental.
Senses
1. happen, come about — To happen, occur, come about, or befall — describing events that take place, often with a note of significance or consequence. German 'geschehen' (to happen, to come to pass) and Spanish 'suceder' (to occur) match the neutral-yet-weighty register. Luke 24:14 uses it for the momentous events the Emmaus disciples discuss; Acts 3:10 describes the crowd's astonishment at what 'had happened' to the healed beggar. Paul employs it both autobiographically for his trials (Acts 20:19) and typologically for Israel's wilderness experiences as warnings (1 Cor 10:11). Peter's use in 1 Pet 4:12 frames present suffering as something purposefully 'happening,' not random misfortune. 8×
