Adj-NMP  |  4× in 1 sense
Joint heir, co-heir; one who shares an inheritance together with another, especially as fellow heirs with Christ.
A compound adjective (syn + kleronomos) designating someone who inherits alongside another. All four NT occurrences carry rich theological freight. In Romans 8:17, believers are 'co-heirs with Christ' — sharing in His glory if they share in His suffering. Ephesians 3:6 extends the concept to Gentiles who are co-heirs of the promise. Hebrews 11:9 applies it to the patriarchs who shared the same promise. First Peter 3:7 applies it domestically: husbands and wives as joint heirs of the grace of life. The multilingual unanimity (spa 'coherederos,' fra 'cohéritier,' deu 'Miterben') reflects the transparency of the compound.

Senses
1. sense 1 A co-inheritor, one who participates jointly in an inheritance. The term always denotes shared reception of a divine gift or promise. In Rom 8:17, believers are co-heirs with Christ (synkleronomoi Christou), sharing both His suffering and His glory. Eph 3:6 marks the Gentiles' inclusion as 'fellow heirs' of the Abrahamic promise alongside Israel — a radical expansion. Heb 11:9 groups Isaac and Jacob as co-heirs of the same promise given to Abraham. 1 Pet 3:7 applies the concept within marriage, calling wives 'co-heirs of the grace of life.' The cross-linguistic glosses (spa 'coherederos,' fra 'cohéritier,' deu 'Miterben') all preserve the compound structure, reflecting how naturally the syn- prefix communicates shared participation.
