To call together, summon, convene an assembly or gathering of people.
A compound of syn ('together') and kaleo ('call'), synkaleo means to summon people into a gathered assembly. It appears in both active and middle voice in the NT. Pilate's soldiers 'called together' the whole cohort to mock Jesus (Mark 15:16). Jesus 'called together' the Twelve to give them authority (Luke 9:1). Delightfully, the parables of the lost sheep and lost coin both use synkaleo for the joyful summoning of friends and neighbors to celebrate recovery (Luke 15:6, 9). In Acts 5:21, the Sanhedrin is formally convened. The word consistently signals intentional, purposeful gathering.

Senses
1. call together, summon, convene To call together, summon, or convene a group of people for a specific purpose — whether formal assembly, military muster, or joyful celebration. The compound structure (syn + kaleo) emphasizes the 'togetherness' of the gathering. Spanish 'convocar' and French 'convoquer' preserve this formal summoning nuance. Luke uses it most frequently: Jesus summons the Twelve for commissioning (Luke 9:1), a shepherd calls friends to celebrate finding his lost sheep (Luke 15:6), and a woman gathers neighbors over a recovered coin (Luke 15:9). In more official contexts, Mark 15:16 has soldiers assembling a cohort, and Acts 5:21 records the convening of the Sanhedrin.
